Action Items Are Back!

I was feeling pretty discouraged about national politics the other day, and I mentioned this to Bob Young, our webmaster. He had some important advice: there’s not much that we can do here in Massachusetts now. But we can donate and do other things to help candidates in red states. Thank you, Bob! I realized that this is important advice: you may love the ideas that Kamala Harris, Elizabeth Warren, Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders and the rest of the 2020 Democratic field are proposing, but unless Democrats win the Senate, keep the House, and win the presidency, none of these things will get done. So if you’re feeling despair, frustration, anxiety, or overwhelmed about national politics, look below for the return of Action Items!

News from the Committees

HDCC Action/Outreach Committee will meet again soon to gear up for the fall. Stay tuned for more details.

Rosemary Young recommends  The Girl with Seven Names: A North Korean Defector’s Story: An extraordinary insight into life under one of the world’s most ruthless and secretive dictatorships – and the story of one woman’s terrifying struggle to avoid capture/repatriation and guide her family to freedom.

Action Items

  1. Donate to Vote Save America. The. folks at Crooked Media have done a lot of the up-front work for us. Donating to the Get Mitch or Die Trying Fund will ensure that your dollars go to support Democrats in the most flippable and important races: “Help do your part by donating to the eventual Democratic nominee in all 10 seats we need to flip (and one we’re protecting, i.e. Alabama).”
  2. Closer to home, donate to Sara Gideon, who is challenging Susan Collins. If you’re like me, you haven’t forgiven Collins for her vote in favor of the corporate tax cuts.
  3. Do you want to see Washington work again? Donate to Mitch McConnell’s challenger, Amy McGrath.  She’s got a terrific introduction video too.
  4. Check in with Swing Left and Sister District Project.
  5. Haverhill has elections in 2019, and there are City Council and mayor candidates who need your support and help. Google “city council candidates Haverhill 2019” to get the scoop. These campaigns are looking for canvassers and other help, so if you’d rather get out there instead of donating, this is the place to start.
  6. These are just a few warm-up Action Items — we all may be a little out of practice, with summer on top of us and school starting soon enough. Stay tuned: there will be postcarding again, opportunities to carpool to Maine to canvass for Gideon, and other people to support.
